Reestablished in 1978, the Department of Economics now has 13 professors (12 Ph.D. advisors), 7 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. It offers 2 bachelor programs in economics and public finance, 5 master programs in political economics, national economics (with the direction of investment economics), western economics, econometrics, and industrial economics, 2 doctoral programs in the first-class disciplines of theoretical economics and applied economics, and 1 postdoctoral station in theoretical economics. Among them, political economics is the national key discipline. In 2003, theoretical economics became the Brand Specialty of the Second Phase of the “985 Project” of Nanjing University and the Brand Specialty of Jiangsu Province. The department possesses several research institutes, such as the Research Institute of Economic Development, the Research Institute of Economic Development across the Taiwan Straits, the Research Center for Investment and Finance, etc.

 The department aims at training professionals who have a solid foundation of contemporary economic theories, a wide range of knowledge and strong adaptive ability. They are expected to engage in teaching and research in economic theories and policies as well as administrative work associated with public finance and investment.

 In recent years, the department has undertaken a large number of international joint projects and national projects and published a great many works, textbooks and papers, many of which were awarded national prizes and have had extensive social influence. The Department won the Second Prize of the National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award respectively in 2001 and 2005, the First Prize of Excellent Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province in 2000, and the Special Prize of the Excellent Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province in 2005. The courses of Political Economics and Microeconomics were conferred the title of National Elite Course in 2003 and 2004 separately. Since 1999, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the bachelor program in economics has been ranked as the National Base for Training Talents in Economics. The National Base for Training Talents in Economics of Nanjing University received high praise from the experts when inspected and evaluated in 2003 and was ranked as “the Excellent Base” by the Ministry of Education.
